Course description

While a relatively geographically small area, the compartments of the head and neck are varied and vital! This area encompasses skin, squamous and respiratory-lined mucosal surfaces, nose and paranasal sinuses, salivary glands, thyroid gland, parathyroid glands, soft tissues, lymph nodes, bone, cartilage, teeth and odontogenic organs, ear, and eye. Pathologic processes include neoplasms (both benign and malignant), infections, autoimmune diseases, and other systemic pathologies, together creating an interesting and dynamic microcosm of general surgical pathology. While an exhaustive survey of all diagnoses of the head and neck is beyond the scope of this course, we intend to introduce learners to the most common tissue types and diseases encountered on the head and neck pathology service. We hope you enjoy the journey!
