Cytopathology Lesson 6:

Salivary Gland Cytopathology

Objectives

  • Recognize the histology of the different types of salivary glands - serous, mixed, mucinous types

  • Recognize the normal cell types on cytology -- organized lobules, ducts, “grape clusters”, also potential metaplasias (likely focal, bland/innocent looking): oncocytic, squamous, cystic change

  • Familiarize oneself with the Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytology - 6 categories (Non-diagnostic, Non-neoplastic, AUS, Benign neoplasm, Salivary gland neoplasm of uncertain malignant potential, Suspicious, Malignant)

  • Understand the approach to salivary gland neoplasms in cytology - for example, from assessing the background (matrix, mucin etc.) to describing the cells (Basaloid, oncocytic, glandular etc.) and correlating that with histology
